“An unnerving element of this gadget (iPhone) is that it is haunted by a weird set of unpredictable user interface delays. One’s mind waits for the response to the press of a virtual button, but it doesn’t come for a while. An odd tension builds during that moment… It’s the ghost of UNIX, still refusing to accommodate the rhythms of my body and my mind.. the idea that a symbol is more important than the flow of time and the underlying continuity of experience.” Jaron Lanier from You are not a Gadget

The only thing anesthesia can count on in regard to the future of machine labor is the fear that people do not want a robot to come at them and stick a tube down their throat.

Instant Heart Rate is the most accurate heart rate monitor app for iPhone and it does not need any external hardware. Easy to use: takes less than 10 seconds from opening the app to getting a reading. Place your finger gently over the camera. Hold it steady for at least 10 seconds. Your current heart rate will be shown on the display. It works by tracking color changes in the light that passes through your finger.

Color changes? We still got some way to go until its a pulse oximeter, but once we get a infrared flash on your phone we are golden. It would be interesting to see a hack. Either way, your smart phone will continue to become one of your most important personal health tools.

My friend Nicholas Felton (of the Annual Feltron Report fame) has finally produced the iPhone app for Daytum. It allows you to quickly and easily track anything you’d want about your life. For example, most people have no idea how much food and drinks they consume in a week. You have to manually enter the information, but it’d be good to actually know how much booze you drink on a weekly basis. And of course it’s beautiful, Nicholas designed it.
I encourage you all to pick one thing about your life you want to track and do it for a week. Your findings may surprise you.
